Mycopunk Threat Levels 1-7 and Mission Modifiers
Threat raises enemy count, damage and elite frequency, not just health. Move up one tier only after a clean extraction at your current tier, and treat four active modifiers as the practical ceiling for a pickup group. Threat 5 to 7 is where Saxonite starts paying out reliably.
Mycopunk runs from threat level 1 to threat level 7, and the ladder is the game's real difficulty system. It is not a health multiplier. Threat raises how many enemies spawn, how hard they hit and how often elites and overclocked variants appear, which means the fight changes shape rather than just getting longer.

What the ladder looks like
Every threat tier has a Steam achievement attached, which gives a reliable read on how far the player base actually gets:
| Threat | Achievement | Global completion |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Safe | 84.7% |
| 2 | Risky | 83.5% |
| 3 | Perilous | 64.3% |
| 4 | Treacherous | 52.5% |
| 5 | Deadly | 41.9% |
| 6 | Onslaught | 30.5% |
| 7 | Predicament | 0.7% |
That distribution tells a story: most players finish a threat 2 mission within their first session, half make it to threat 4, and threat 7 is a rounding error. There is no shame in sitting at 3 or 4 — the majority of players do, and the loot curve is not so steep that you need 7.
What actually changes between tiers
- Enemy count. More bodies per wave, and less downtime between waves. This is the change you feel first.
- Damage. Everything hits harder, including overclocked explosions, which scale further at higher threat.
- Elite frequency. More overclocked and shielded variants, so more of each wave is spent stripping parts rather than killing bodies.
- Material payout. Saxonite, the resource that gates most good crafting, only starts rolling from threat 2 upward. Community-tracked rates from Early Access put threat 2 around a few percent, climbing sharply by threat 5 and 6. The 1.0 patch increased the drop chance across the board, so treat those older numbers as a floor rather than a current figure.
Solo players get one specific concession: 1.0 slightly lowered the maximum enemy count when playing solo on threat 3 and 4. If you play alone, threat 4 is meaningfully more achievable than it was in Early Access.
Mission modifiers
Modifiers are the second dial, and they stack. They are optional, chosen before you drop, and they change the rules rather than the numbers — which makes them far more dangerous than an extra threat tier if you pick them carelessly.
There is an achievement for completing a mission with at least four active modifiers, and it sits around 27% — meaning a quarter of players have deliberately stacked four. That is roughly the practical ceiling for a pickup group. Five or more is a pre-made activity.
How to think about them:
- Read what the modifier does to your movement first. Movement modifiers are the ones that kill crews, because they invalidate the escape routes you have learned.
- Pair modifiers with the objective. A modifier that spawns more enemies is fine on a kill objective and miserable on a hold objective.
- Do not stack modifiers you cannot counter with your current loadout. If your build depends on reload, the reload modifier is a hard no.
Building for a threat tier, not a number
The single biggest mistake players make is treating threat as a damage check. It is not. Higher threat means more simultaneous problems: more guns firing, more shields up, more parts to strip. The stats that scale into it are reload speed, magazine size, movement and survivability — not raw damage.
| If you are stuck at | The usual fix |
|---|---|
| Threat 1-2 | Stop body-shooting; strip weapons first |
| Threat 3 | Add a movement upgrade and learn the extraction route |
| Threat 4 | Build one dedicated area weapon instead of two primaries |
| Threat 5-6 | Commit to elemental synergy with your crew |
| Threat 7 | It is a pre-made-group activity; bring a Wrangler and a Bruiser |
The 1.0 tuning that matters
The launch patch touched difficulty in ways that are worth knowing:
- Missileheads attack slower and hit softer, and no longer dump all four shells at once.
- Optical Jammers have less health and spawn less often.
- Autocannon fire rate was reduced.
- The Devastator's gravity surge field is smaller.
- Overclocked explosions hit other enemies much harder, and more so at higher threat — turning the hazard into a tool at exactly the tiers where you need one.
- The ladders' late achievements were given minimum level requirements: Abomination Assault and Ouroboros both gate on level, so a fresh account cannot jump straight into them.
There is also a small piece of comedy in the patch history worth recording: version 1.0.1 fixed a lobby filter that displayed threat 8. Threat 8 does not exist — as the notes put it, not yet.
